Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a treatment method that uses an individual’s own concentrated platelets, which are small cells in the blood that assist with blood clotting. The plasma has a large number of growth factors in them that help to promote healing. When it is injected into the injured location, not only is pain reduced, but healing is accelerated. Moreover, this treatment can actually diminish the need for medications or even surgeries. It can be used to treat tendonitis, arthritis, plantar fasciitis or ligament, cartilage and bone injuries. Chronic scar development is common with fascia or tendon injuries, which can be slow to heal, but plasma can deliver good blood supply to the injured region of the foot. This treatment jump starts and stimulates inflammation that speeds up the healing process. The PRP is obtained from a small portion of blood which is put through a centrifuge and concentrated. The concentration is then injected back into the injured area of the foot. It is astonishing to see that the PRP has up to five times the amount of growth factors in comparison to blood that has not been put through this process.
Recovery for this treatment includes:
- Slight pain for a few days at the injection site.
- Mobility and weight bearing may be limited to assist with the healing process.
- Normal routine activity may be returned to after a week of rest.
- There could be a risk of infection as with most procedures.
