Don’t Let Flat Feet Get You Down

Flat feet have a way of causing little drama at the beginning, only to become problematic later on with lack of treatment. Flat feet develop when there is an alteration in the form of the foot because the arch is not in a neutral position and occur because the tendons holding joints together have become loose. These tendons are meant to constrict and create the shape of the arch as children grow, but when they do not, the tendons of the ankle can weaken, which seriously hinders the support in the arch.

Factors that play a role in contributing to the formation of flat feet include aging, obesity, diabetes or severe traumatic injuries to the foot. Because there is a misalignment that causes flat feet, the whole body can be thrown off of alignment. This not only affects your feet but also the ankles, knees or hips. For these reasons, you can find a way out of flat feet by utilizing the latest treatment methods to get that arch back!

Treatment for this condition includes:

  • Orthotics, which are very helpful in fighting unwanted pressures away from the arch of your foot. They can be custom-fitted to the contours of your feet.
  • Wearing shoes with arch supports that fit correctly.
  • Physical therapy in the form of stretching the calf muscle.
  • A cast may be required to help ease pain and isolate the foot.
  • Pain relievers to help reduce pain while permitting good mobility.
  • Surgery, if the lack of an arch produces a significant deformity.
