Good Foot Health is Essential in Preventing Falls

How would you estimate your risk of a fall? High, medium, or low? Interestingly, a majority of adults do not know that they are at risk of falling, and of the foot and ankle injuries that can result.  In fact, nearly one third of Americans over the age of 65 will fall each year, and that figure jumps to 50% after the age of 85. These falls frequently lead to bone fractures, infection, and hospitalization. Even worse, falls are the number one cause of injury-related deaths among senior citizens.

September 23 is Falls Prevention Awareness Day, and Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos is celebrating by letting you know two ways that your podiatrist can help you reduce your risk of falling, and two ways that you can help yourself.

What Your Foot Doctor Can Do to Reduce Your Risk of Falling

  • Your foot doctor is expert in diagnosing and managing all illnesses of your feet and ankles. This includes deformities such as bunions and hammertoes, painful arthritis, and foot-related complications of diabetes. Think of your feet as the foundation of pain-free-standing and walking. When they are in good health, you’re able to move through your days safely.
  • If you are having difficulty walking with ease, your podiatrist can prescribe an assistive device such as a cane or a walker to help you. S/he can also provide custom orthotics, shoe inserts that offer increased cushioning and support when you stand, walk, or run, and decreasing your risk of a fall.

What You Can Do to Reduce Your Risk of Falling

  • Keep a clean, safe home. Many falls are the result of tripping on clutter. Area rugs are another common cause for stumbling. Roll them up and put them away. If you prefer a soft, covered floor, consider wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • Exercise regularly. Physical activity is key to maintaining strength, balance, and flexibility. You don’t have to hang out at the gym! Take a walk or sign up for a gentle yoga class if you prefer.

Of course, the best thing that you can do to keep feet healthy is to see a board-certified podiatrist like Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM at least once a year for examination, diagnosis, and treatment.
