Celebrate Healthy Aging Month with Healthy Feet and Ankles

September is Healthy Aging Month and a great opportunity for Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to share some information about steps you can take to keep feet, ankles, and lower legs healthy and pain-free throughout a long lifetime.

  • Become familiar with the shape of your feet and report any changes to your podiatrist. Be alert to a bump where the big to joins the foot, which can indicate the formation of a bunion, or a toe that rises up and out of line with the others, which might mean you are developing a hammertoe.
  • Stay safe from falls that can result in foot and ankle injuries. Keep your home free from clutter. Tack down or remove area rugs that could cause you to trip. Choose sensible shoes with non-skid soles and make sure they fit snugly to maximize stability. If your doctor has recommended an assistive device for walking, be sure to use it regularly.
  • Whole-body chronic illnesses such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes pose risks to foot health. Be sure to follow your doctor’s orders and take your medication regularly. Discuss any new diagnoses or prescriptions with your entire health care team, including your podiatrist.
  • Keep in mind, while the many bones and joints of the feet and ankles are vulnerable to degenerative illnesses such as arthritis, foot pain is neither unavoidable nor untreatable. Many treatments that your podiatrist can offer are non-invasive, such as custom orthotics for enhanced cushioning and support.
