Diabetes Can Damage Foot Health

How much do you know about diabetes? The fourth Tuesday in March is Diabetes Alert Day and a great opportunity to make sure you are well-informed about this dangerous illness that can put foot health at risk. Here is some information that Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos wants to share:

What is diabetes?

Your endocrine system is a group of glands in your body that produces hormones. These hormones then trigger actions in other parts of your body. For example, one of these glands, called the pituitary gland, produces reproductive hormones. When it becomes active in an adolescent, puberty begins.

Similarly, a small gland called the pancreas produces the chemical hormone insulin, responsible for regulating glucose levels in the bloodstream. When the pancreas fails to produce sufficient amounts of insulin, it leads to spikes and plummets in blood sugar levels. It is diabetes.

Men, women, and children are all at risk of diabetes. You can reduce your risk level by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet. Be sure to choose whole grains, lean protein, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

How does diabetes affect the body?

Diabetes can lead to health issues almost anywhere in the body: the kidneys, the cardiovascular system, and even the eyes. Diminished circulation to the extremities is common. In the feet, diabetes can lead to neuropathy, which most often presents as numbness. This lack of sensation can make it hard to notice minor nicks and cuts, so people with diabetes should regularly inspect their feet. A lack of blood flow means that the body experiences challenges to heal itself, and these minor injuries can turn into diabetic ulcers, deep wounds that are hard to heal. Hospitalization, amputation, and even death can result.

People with diabetes need to see a podiatrist at least once each year to receive an expert examination, diagnosis, and treatment. Your foot doctor is a medical specialist with years of training and experience and is the best-qualified medical specialist to care for your feet, ankles, and lower legs.
