For Good Foot Health, Put One Foot in Front of the Other

People often come to the My Chicago Foot Expert office and ask Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos, “What can I do to improve my foot and ankle health?” One answer is simple: Take a walk! The first Wednesday in April is National Walking Day and a great opportunity to remind you of the many benefits that walking can offer your health. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Walking  is a weight-bearing exercise, the most often recommended type of activity to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, an illness that weakens the bones. A simple fall can result in fractures or other injuries for those with osteoporosis. The delicate bones of the feet are particularly vulnerable.
  • Combined with a sensible diet based on whole grains, lean protein, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, walking helps maintain moderate body weight. It reduces the stress on the feet and lessens the likelihood of fallen arches and other painful conditions.
  • Time outside is a known mood-booster. Walking regularly may lessen symptoms of depression and anxiety. This benefit can increase when you invite a pet or a friend to join you on your excursion.

Before setting out to walk, make sure your shoes or sneakers are in good condition. They should be comfortable and free from rips or tears. Soles should have plenty of treads left to offer good stability.

Your feet should not hurt when you stand, walk, or run, no matter your age. If they do, it’s time to visit your foot doctor. Your podiatrist will examine your feet, diagnose your issue, and provide effective treatment. Many options for care are entirely non-invasive, including medication, physical therapy, and custom orthotics for added cushioning and support.
