Millions of men, women, and kids around the world will celebrate Global Running Day on June 2. Are you among them? Running outside is one of the best things that you can do for your physical and mental health. Studies show that regular exercise – even at a moderate pace – can improve cardiovascular health, build muscle, help maintain a moderate weight, and reduce episodes of anxiety and depression. Running is also great for the bones, muscles, and soft tissues of the feet, ankles, and lower legs but, if you’re not careful, ankle sprains, shin splints, and other foot and ankle injuries can occur.
Here’s some advice from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to keep you safe:
- Are you new to running? Always see a qualified foot doctor before beginning any exercise program. This is the best way to be sure that feet and ankles are healthy and to prevent arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and other chronic ailments from impeding your progress. Your podiatrist will carefully examine your feet and ankles, check for problems, diagnose any issues, and offer effective treatment when needed.
- Wear bright colors and reflective clothing to ensure that you are visible to motorists.
- Carry identification and make sure that someone at home knows where you’re going.
- Build your progress slowly. Start at a moderate pace, short distance, and work your way up to faster, longer runs.
- Make sure your running shoes offer great cushioning and support. If they’re more than a year old or have seen more than 500 miles, it’s time to replace them. Remember foot size can change, even for adults. Take advantage of the opportunity to head to your favorite brick-and-mortar store and ask a staff member to measure your feet to ensure that you’re wearing the right size.
- You should not experience foot pain when you run – or ever! If discomfort is keeping you off your feet, talk to your podiatrist. Many non-invasive treatment options are available, including orthotics, custom shoe inserts prescribed and provided by your foot doctor.
