August is here and it brings with it all the fun of the season. What’s on your agenda for the month? Beach trips? Vacations? Outdoor exercise? Barbecues with family and friends? Have a wonderful time but remember to be careful to protect foot and ankle health. Here are six recommendations from Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to keep you and your whole family feeling great.
- Hosting a picnic or barbecue? Sparks do tend to fly! Never go near a grill or campfire barefoot or wearing only sandals. Tending a fire means wearing closed-toe shoes to protect feet from painful burns.
- Remember the skin on your feet and ankles is vulnerable to skin cancer, just like the skin anywhere else on your body. Use a high-SPF sunscreen everywhere, even between the toes. Reapply often, especially after swimming or sweating.
- Quality footwear will protect you from foot an ankle injury while hiking, running, or enjoying any other exercise. Choose a pair of high-top sneakers with ankle support if you’re prone to sprains. Make sure the cushioning and arch support are in good condition for maximum effectiveness. If your podiatrist has prescribed orthotics, use them every time you work out.
- Prevent foot cramps by staying well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water every day. Avoid caffeinated beverages, which can actually rob the body of hydration.
- Do you have diabetes? It’s tempting to enjoy ice cream and other sugary treats, but it’s more important to keep blood glucose levels stable to protect your health. Stick with lean protein and whole grains. Enjoy the bountiful summer vegetables with a big salad for dinner.
- If you’re planning on showing off your toes in a pair of summer sandals, remember to stay safe from plantar warts and other infections during salon pedicures. Choose a spa known for its attention to cleanliness. Watch to be sure that basins are clean, and disposable liners replaced between patrons. Bring your own tools and decline to offer of callus removal with a razor or grater, which can cause small wounds that allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream.
