Tips to Reduce Your Risk of a Fall

You know the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?” It applies to so many things, including foot health. You already know about eating right and exercising to reduce the risk of diabetes, and wearing sensible footwear to stay safe from conditions, such as bunions and hammertoes. Today, as we quickly approach the end of Falls Prevention Awareness Month, let’s talk about the steps you can take to reduce your risk of a fall.

  • Keep a tidy home. Clutter on the floor is a common contributor to accidents. If you have area rugs, use pads underneath them to ensure they don’t move and tack edges down if necessary.
  • Be sure all your lighting is working properly. Ask for help replacing bulbs if you need it. Place automatic night lights throughout your residence.
  • Install railings on both sides of stairs and add grab bars to tubs, showers, and toilet areas.
  • Shoes matter here, too. Always wear shoes at home, especially on the stairs. Avoid pairs with smooth, no-tread soles or high heels. Tie your laces.
  • Making the transition to using a cane or a walker can be a difficult one, but don’t let pride lead to a fall! If mobility or stability are an issue, talk to your doctor about devices that can provide assistance.
  • If you need to reach something on a high shelf, use a “grab stick.” If that won’t do the job, carefully step on a stool or ladder and be sure that you’re adhering to safety standards. Don’t climb too high on that ladder and always ask someone else to be your spotter.
  • Walking a dog? Be sure that your pet is properly leash-trained and won’t pull you off your feet. It’s never too old for that old dog to learn a new trick. Hire a trainer if leash behavior is an issue.

Consider investing in a device to assist you in summoning help if a fall occurs. That might be a medical alert signaling device or, if you’re comfortable with newer technology, a watch that can connect to your mobile phone. Even some smart assistants like Amazon’s Echo devices can be configured to call 911 if necessary.
