Melanoma is a Foot Health Risk

July is just around the corner, so it’s time for Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos and the My Chicago Foot Expert staff to remind you that July is UV Safety Awareness Month. How much do you know about the relationship between the sun’s dangerous ultraviolet rays and foot health?

When you think about cancer, you probably think of some common and deadly cancers like breast cancer, lung cancer, or pancreatic cancer. Skin cancer is just as prevalent and just as deadly. The odds of a total recovery increase with early detection.

Melanoma is one of the most common varieties of skin cancer. It is particularly associated with exposure to UV rays. One of the best ways to keep safe is to cover up when you’re outside and use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on any skin exposed to sunlight. Remember to reapply often, especially after swimming or sweating, and don’t stop at your ankles! Be sure to apply sunscreen to your feet, even between the toes.

It’s essential to check your skin often for any signs of skin cancer and ask a friend or family member to look on your back or at other places you can’t see. Be alert to any new or changing moles that appear blue or black or are bleeding or any lumps or bumps. Seek medical attention if you find anything suspicious. To spot melanoma, keep the acronym ABCDE in mind:

  • Asymmetry– An asymmetrical mole should be regarded as suspicious.
  • Border – Moles that have irregular edges are cause for concern.
  • Color – Be alert to multiple colors in a single mole.
  • Diameter– If your mole is greater than the size of about 5 millimeters, it should be looked at by a doctor.
  • Evolving– Report a mole that changes color, shape, or size to your doctor without delay.

Melanoma can develop anywhere on the foot but is often found on the sole or under a toenail. Your foot doctor is a medical expert and the best-qualified specialist to help you with examination and diagnosis. Schedule a visit with your podiatrist if you notice anything unusual, including a black toenail.

If your doctor does diagnose melanoma or pre-cancerous cells, they can then help you with appropriate treatment, including foot and ankle surgery, to increase the odds of a full recovery.
