Orthotics Provide Relief for Aching Feet
Have you heard of custom orthotics? Do you know what they are and what they are used for? Do you know the difference between orthotics and over-the-counter gel inserts? Here is some useful information from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:
What Are Orthotics?
Custom orthotics are medical devices provided to men, women, and children of all ages by an expert podiatrist. Slipped into the shoes, they can improve foot and ankle movement and increase comfort, stability, and mobility. Numerous studies have demonstrated custom orthotics can decrease foot pain and improve function.
There are two types of orthotics:
- Functional orthoticsare used to correct abnormal motion. They may be used to address atypical gait and can also be used to relieve the foot and ankle pain caused by injuries such as shin splints or tendinitis. After a mold of the foot is made, functional orthotics are usually made of a firm material such as plastic or graphite.
- Accommodative orthotics are preferred for the treatment of issues related to diabetes, painful corns or calluses, and other uncomfortable conditions. They are softer than functional orthotics and are used to provide additional cushioning and support.
Your podiatrist uses orthotics to treat a wide range of issues, including:
- plantar fasciitis
- diabetic ulcers
- arthritis
- foot deformities including bunions and hammertoes
Shoe Inserts vs. Custom Orthotics
The one-size-fits-all shoe inserts sold in pharmacies and big-box stores might provide some short-term relief for your foot pain, but they’re no match for custom orthotics provided by your podiatrist. Those over-the-counter inserts add a bit of cushioning and support to your shoes, but custom orthotics will do a better job of accommodating your unique foot structure. They are so much better for your feet that some insurance plans will assist with their cost. Check with your provider to learn more about your coverage.
