Winter Boots for Better Foot Health

Winter is coming, and the snow and ice that Chicago is famous for from coast to coast. All over the city, men, women, and kids are pulling their heavy coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and more from storage as they prepare for the months ahead. Are your family’s boots up to the task? Here are some tips from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to help you ensure that your boots will keep you warm and safe in the months to come.
First, take a good look at last year’s boots:
- Are there rips or holes that could allow water inside? Combined with warm feet, that moisture can create a hospitable environment for microbes and lead to Athlete’s foot and other fungal infections.
- Is the tread on the soles still in good condition, or has it worn down? A smooth sole can increase the risk of falling on snow and ice and lead to foot and ankle injuries.
- Do they still fit? Kids’ foot size can change from year to year, but so can an adult’s! Make sure everyone’s boots are snug and comfortable.
If you need new boots, head to your local shoe store and keep these suggestions in mind:
- Have feet professionally measured to ensure a proper fit.
- Ensure your boots leave room for thick socks to keep you warm. If you have custom orthotics for cushioning or support, you’ll need to allow room for them. Be sure to bring them with you when you go shopping.
- Choose waterproof, insulated boots with a wide, roomy toe box that allows for movement. It will minimize the cramping of the toes that can lead to deformities such as bunions and hammertoes.
- A thick lug sole will keep you safe no matter the weather.
