Custom Orthotics Can Relieve Hammertoe Discomfort
April is Foot Health Awareness Month and a chance for you to learn more about hammertoes, a common foot deformity. Have you noticed a change in your foot shape, or are you experiencing discomfort? Both are reasons to see a podiatrist like Cook County foot doctor, Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos, without delay.
What is a hammertoe?
A hammertoe occurs when the tendon that connects your toe to the muscles of your foot shortens, causing the toe to rise up and out of line with the others. This toe may bend and be difficult to straighten or straight and difficult to bend. It can point upward or downward, depending on which joint it affects. A hammertoe can occur at any toe but are most common on the smaller toes.
Who is at risk for hammertoe?
Anyone can get a hammertoe, but women are at higher risk than men. This may result from footwear choices, so be sure to choose sensible shoes with a roomy toe box for everyday use. The risk of hammertoe increases with age. Of note, if your second toe is longer than your big toe, you are at increased risk of hammertoe.
What are the symptoms of hammertoe?
The most obvious symptom of a hammertoe is a noticeable change in the appearance of your foot. Other signs of hammertoe include pain when standing, walking, or exercising and difficulty wearing shoes.
Is treatment for hammertoe available?
Your podiatrist is a medical specialist with years of education and training, including a hospital residency. They are experts in treating all conditions that affect the health of your feet, ankles, and lower legs, including hammertoes.
Personalized shoe inserts that can provide improved cushioning and support for your feet, orthotics are one common treatment option for hammertoes. If your podiatrist determines that orthotics is the most appropriate treatment for your hammertoe, they will make a mold of your foot – often using a computerized foot scan – and will create orthotics specific to your needs. Insurance usually covers these custom medical devices. Check with your provider to understand your policy.
