Protect Feet from Fungal Infections

Fungal Infections

A fungal infection can occur anywhere on your body. The skin on your feet is particularly vulnerable, as are the nails. These illnesses are not typically serious, but they can be uncomfortable. Knowing how to prevent and spot an infection and what to do if you suspect that you’ve developed one is important. The CDC’s Fungal Disease Awareness Week is coming up soon. Here is some information that Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos is happy to share with you:

A fungal infection like athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) occurs when a small pathogen enters the body and causes a reaction. These fungi often find their way in through a small – possibly even too small to notice – opening in the skin.

You can prevent infection by creating a barrier between your skin and other surfaces, especially the areas where others’ feet may have touched.

  • Pack some sandals in your gym bag to wear in the shower, locker room, and pool deck.
  • Traveling? Wear slippers in your hotel room.
  • If you like to have a periodic spa pedicure, be sure that the salon uses disposable basin liners. Bring your tools if possible.

Remember that fungus thrives in damp, warm environments. Wash feet daily with an antimicrobial soap and dry them well, especially between the toes. Let your sweaty shoes air out overnight and spray them with an antifungal product. If possible, rotate through more than one pair over the course of the week.

Be alert to signs of fungal infection. These include redness, itching, scaling, flaking, and burning on the skin. These are typical symptoms if your toenails become white, yellow, or brittle or if they begin to split.

The good news is that fungal infections are treatable but can be stubborn. Treatment options may include topical and/or oral medications to resolve any discomfort and treat your infection. Over-the-counter medications may help, or they can be entirely ineffective. A better first step toward wellness is a visit with your podiatrist. Your foot doctor is a medical specialist with years of education and experience and is the best person to determine exactly what is occurring. Then, armed with a specific and accurate diagnosis, your doctor will create a care plan.
