New Year’s Resolutions for Good Foot Health
Welcome to 2023! Did you know that over 40% of Americans make resolutions to kick off the new year? Year after year, exercising more, eating more healthfully, and quitting smoking are among the nation’s top 10 resolutions. They’re good intentions that will improve overall health and mainly benefit the wellness of feet and ankles. The problem is that while 41% of Americans make resolutions, only 9% are actually successful at keeping them. Here are some tips from Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to help you:
Exercise More
Regular exercise is a great way to maintain moderate body weight. It also offers benefits to cardiovascular health, helps lower blood pressure, and improves mood. It also keeps bones healthy, lowering your risk of osteoporosis, a dangerous weakening of the bones that can lead to fractures, especially in the feet. Bundle up and head outside for a walk with a friend or a pet. Prefer indoor activity this time of year? Sign up for a gentle yoga class, which may also improve flexibility and balance.
Eat Healthfully
Forget about “going on a diet” and focus on improving your daily menu instead. Aim for five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Eat plenty of whole grains like brown rice and lean protein sources such as chicken breast and fish. Drink water at every meal. Limit alcohol to prevent attacks of gout. Save sweets for special occasions, especially if you have diabetes. Consider cutting back portion size. Look at the distribution of foods you eat. If you’re consuming primarily starchy sides, try increasing the proportion of vegetables until they take up half of the space on your plate.
Quit Smoking
You already know that smoking and other tobacco use are dangerous for your heart and lungs. Smoking can contribute to cancer, high blood pressure, and circulation issues like Raynaud’s disease, which affects the feet. It’s never too late to quit! Quitting is hard, but there are new medical supports to help you. Talk to your doctor about prescription medications that can curb cravings as you work toward your goal.
