4 Techniques to Strengthen the Ankles
The ankles are crucial in providing stability and balance to the body while walking, running, or jogging. Therefore, this joint undergoes a lot of wear and tear. At My Chicago Foot Expert, our podiatrist, Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos, who specializes in all foot and ankle issues, knows the value of strengthening the ankles to maintain a quality life.
People with chronically weak ankles have several complaints regarding persistent pain, difficulty maintaining balance, and frequent injuries or sprains. We suggest you visit a podiatrist if you are experiencing such symptoms for a prolonged period. A podiatrist like Dr. Alexopoulos can help resolve your discomfort with careful examination, accurate diagnosis, and expert care.
Here are four exercises to help you steadily and surely build ankle strength:
- Hold onto a chair or another sturdy object and align your feet with your hips. Balance on one foot for 10-20 seconds and then repeat with the other. You can gradually increase the time and repetitions of the set as your ankle gets stronger.
- To strengthen the calves, you can incorporate the following exercise. Place your feet aligned with your hips on a stair. Hold the banister with one hand, stretch on your toes, and lower them. Repeat ten times or as you prefer.
- You can perform this next exercise from the comfort of your bed. Lie flatly on your back, raise your leg, and draw the alphabet in the air. Repeat with the other leg.
- Lie on a flat surface, put your heels on the floor, and point your toes upwards. Stretch them as much as you can. Hold the position for 10 seconds and then release. Repeat this position ten times or per your comfort.
