What is Chronic Ankle Instability?
We’ve all suffered a twisted ankle at least once in our lives, but if you have Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI), this may be quite an understatement. CAI is a real condition (a common one, in fact) that occurs when the ankle joint becomes repeatedly unstable, often due to previous sprains or injuries.
But while it can significantly impact daily activities and athletic performance, there are ways to manage CAI that we at My Chicago Foot Expert are here to share!
Understanding Chronic Ankle Instability
CAI occurs when the ligaments surrounding the ankle joint become weakened or stretched, thereby making the ankle prone to rolling or giving way. This instability can lead to recurring sprains, pain, swelling, and limited mobility. It may also lead to mental insecurity, making you hold back during sports or refrain from them completely.
Causes of Chronic Ankle Instability
Beyond repeated injuries that can weaken the ligaments, deficits in coordination, or naturally clumsy, people are more prone to CAI. CAI is also common in athletes due to their high incidence of ankle sprains. In fact, ankle sprains are the most common injury among collegiate athletes, according to an NIH study.
CAI is also common for less active people, such as the elderly, who have weaker foot and ankle muscles on average. And for others, genetics play a role in this weakness: some peoples’ loose ankle anatomy predisposes them to instability.
Managing Chronic Ankle Instability
- Physical therapy: Exercises to strengthen the muscles around the ankle and improve balance.
- Bracing or taping: Using braces or tape can provide additional support to the ankle.
- Orthotics: Custom orthotics can help correct foot mechanics and improve stability.
- Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged ligaments or address underlying anatomical issues.
Preventing Recurrent Sprains
To prevent recurrent ankle sprains and manage chronic ankle instability, it’s crucial to warm up properly before physical activity, wear supportive footwear, strengthen the ankle muscles, and pay attention to pain. By following these strategies, individuals can improve their quality of life and reduce the frequency of sprains.
