Caring for the Special Foot Health Needs of Older Patients

If you are a senior citizen, it’s not news to you that the body changes as we age. What might be a bit of a surprise, however, is learning that these changes don’t just happen from the knees up. Foot health is affected, as well. Happily, your board-certified podiatrist is an expert in caring for the feet, ankles, and lower legs of older men and women. They can provide treatment for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Diabetes: Nearly 10% of Americans have diabetes, a condition in which the body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin, which is needed to regulate levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Diabetes can cause dangerous complications in the feet, most notably neuropathy, a loss of sensation. Combined with diminished circulation, this numbness means that diabetics are more likely than others to suffer from infection and ulcerated wounds – injuries that don’t heal properly and become infected. Hospitalization and even amputation can result.
  • Osteoporosis: Many patients experience a decrease in bone density as they age. In addition to age-related balance issues, this can increase the possibility that you might break a bone in a fall. One in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will experience a fracture related to this loss of bone strength.
  • Joint pain: It’s common for older people to develop arthritis, a painful and chronic inflammation of the joints. With 26 bones and 33 joints in each, it’s not surprising that the feet and ankles are commonly affected.
  • Toenail Fungus and other infections: Maintain good foot hygiene and be sure to wash and dry your feet daily to reduce your risk of infection. If a limited, range of motion makes this a challenge, get help from a family member or an aide. Ask your podiatrist to inspect your feet for signs of fungus, warts, or other infections during your appointment.

Everyone should see a podiatrist for an annual examination. This is especially critical for people over 60. Schedule a visit with Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos in our modern, comfortable Chicago office today.  Call the friendly My Chicago Foot Expert staff at (773) 561-8100 or click here today.
