Metatarsalgia: Pain in the Ball of the Foot
It’s common for foot pain to be localized in the ball of the foot, the area between the arches, and the toes on the bottom of the foot. This is metatarsalgia. It usually centers on the metatarsals, the five bones under the toes.
Anyone can develop metatarsalgia, but it is more common in men and women who run or participate in start-and-stop court sports such as tennis and basketball. Other risk factors and contributing conditions include:
- a second toe longer than the first
- unusually high arches
- foot deformities such as bunions and hammertoes
- arthritis
- gout
- frequent wearing of poorly-fitting or high heel shoes
Be alert to sharp or aching pain centered at the ball of your foot. Pay particular attention to other slowly developing symptoms including numbness or tingling in your toes, or a feeling like there is a pebble in your shoe that you can’t remove. If you notice any of these, schedule a visit with your foot doctor as soon as possible. With years of specialized training and experience, a board-certified podiatrist like Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos is the best-qualified medical professional to examine, diagnose, and treat this part of your body. If your doctor confirms your suspicion of metatarsalgia, s/he will have numerous treatment options available, including:
- over-the-counter and prescription medications for pain and swelling
- at-home RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) therapy
- professional physical therapy
- immobilization with a cast or boot
- prescription orthotics for cushioning and support
- surgery, but only in rare and extreme cases
