Limb Loss is a Risk for Diabetics
April is Limb Loss Prevention Month. Did you know that diabetes is the leading cause of lower limb amputation in the United States? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 60% of all non-accident-related amputations occur among people with diabetes. Each year, 73,000 diabetics lose a limb, and up to 50% of diabetics will die in the two years following their amputation. Legs and lives are at stake.
If you have diabetes, your feet, ankles, and lower legs are at risk, but you can take steps to keep them healthy. Here are some suggestions from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:
- You must be vigilant about maintaining your health. Take all medication for diabetes and other illnesses exactly as prescribed. Eat a sensible diet that helps you maintain a moderate weight. Exercise regularly. If arthritis or another condition is making it hard to walk or exercise regularly, talk to your podiatrist. There are many non-invasive options available to provide relief, including custom orthotics.
- Diabetes can lead to neuropathy, a loss of sensation in the feet. When feeling diminishes, it becomes more challenging to notice the discomfort typically associated with small nicks and cuts or other injuries. Peripheral arterial disease, a reduction in blood flow to the feet, is a common complication of diabetes. Without enough blood, it can be hard for small injuries to heal. Infection can set in and diabetic ulcers, bone-deep wounds can occur, leading to hospitalization and amputation. Be alert to any changes in the feeling or appearance of your feet and report any new symptoms to your podiatrist without delay. If it’s hard for you to see your own feet, ask a loved one to help.
- Prevent blisters and other irritations from forming. Wear sensible, comfortable shoes every day, and make sure they are in good condition with plenty of cushioning and support.
- Visit an experienced foot doctor at least once each year. With years of specialized training and experience, your foot doctor is an expert in caring for people with diabetes and is the best-qualified medical professional to help you.
