Tips for Your Next Trip to the Shoe Store

When you go to the shoe store, you want to find a pair of boots, shoes, sandals, or sneakers but, even more than that, you want to choose a pair that’s going to be comfortable for a reasonable period. Here are some tips from Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to help guide your next trip:

  1. Plan your excursion for as late in the day as possible. Feet tend to be a bit larger as the day goes on. If your new shoes are comfortable, then they’ll be comfortable all day.
  2. Go to a brick-and-mortar store where a professional can measure your feet. The length and width of your feet can change with age. It is especially true for children, whose feet can change a half size every few months.
  3. If you normally wear special socks or if you use inserts or custom orthotics for cushioning and support, be sure to bring them with you.
  4. Shoes should be comfortable right out of the box. There is no such thing as a “breaking in” period.
  5. Skip high heels for everyday use. Over time, these fashion-forward pumps can lead to foot deformities such as bunions and hammertoes. Instead, choose a comfortable pair of shoes with a low, chunky heel and a wide, roomy toe box. Non-skid soles will reduce your risk of a fall and will help prevent foot and ankle injuries.
  6. If you’re buying athletic footwear, choose the most appropriate shoes for your sport. Remember that running shoes should be replaced every six months or 500 miles, whichever comes first.
  7. Second-hand or consignment shops are great places to find bargains, but stick to clothing and accessories. Buying used shoes is not a great idea. Cushioning and support can be worn out, leading to problems.
