Keep Feet and Ankles Safe This Winter

Safe

Do you have a favorite season? One survey found that 41% of U.S. adults choose fall. Spring and summer each received 24% of the total favorite vote, while only 11% said winter is their season of choice. Each season has something to offer: fall’s crisp air and colorful beauty, the promise of spring, summer fun…even winter holidays and sports. But winter does bring something that other seasons don’t: an increased risk of foot health problems. Let’s look at why this happens and what you can do to stay safe:

Foot pain

You might notice an increase in discomfort during the winter months. This might be because you’ve gained a bit of weight over the holidays, putting additional stress on soft tissues. Drop those extra pounds by eating smart and exercising and you’ll be back on track. But if you notice the pain is concentrated in the heel, or that it’s worse first thing in the morning, you might be dealing with plantar fasciitis. The best way to know for sure is to schedule an exam with a qualified podiatrist like Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos. Your podiatrist will examine your feet and ankles, diagnose the source of your discomfort, and offer a plan for treatment. Did you know that many options, such as custom orthotics, are entirely non-invasive?

Fractures and sprains

Snow and ice are more than inconvenient; they’re dangerous! It’s easy to slip and fall, injuring the delicate bones of the feet or causing an ankle sprain. Stay safe by keeping walkways clear and wearing sensible footwear. Snowy days are no time for high heels.

Frostbite

Frostbite isn’t just a problem for Arctic explorers. You can be affected, too. If you’re outside and begin to notice that feet are feeling cold or tingly, it’s time to come in. These are the signs of frostnip, the first stage of frostbite. Soak feet in warm (not hot) water to improve blood flow and warm up. You should be especially alert to more serious signs of frostbite such as numbness or a change in the color of your feet to blue, yellow, or gray.
