Heel Cracks Are a Winter Risk

When the skin on the feet becomes very dry, heel cracks can happen. This risk increases in winter months, when a lack of humidity in the air can rob skin of moisture. Also known as fissures, heel cracks are not only unattractive; they are painful. Further, these chronic breaks in the skin can provide entry points for the pathogens that cause infection. This is especially dangerous for people with diabetes and other illnesses that diminish circulation and pose a challenge to healing.
Fortunately, heel cracks can be prevented and treated. Here are some tips to keep feet looking and feeling great from Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:
- Increase the humidity level in your home. Install a humidifier on your heating system or purchase a portable unit and use it in the winter.
- A calluses are thick, dry patches of skin everywhere on your body. On the heels, calluses are even more prone to cracking. If you notice a callus developing, see your podiatrist for care. Never use a sharp implement to remove calluses at home or allow a nail technician to perform this service at a salon. Injury and infection can result.
- Moisturize your heels twice daily with a thick emollient lotion. It’s especially effective to do this after showering, when feet are wet. Be sure to wear socks or slippers after moisturizing to prevent slipping and falling.
- Use an exfoliating lotion once daily to remove dead skin.
- Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Dry skin is often an indicator of ongoing, low-level dehydration. Avoid caffeinated beverages, which can actually be dehydrating.
- Keep your skin and your whole body healthy with a balanced diet rich in whole grains, lean protein, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.
If you notice a heel crack developing, schedule a visit with your podiatrist as quickly as possible. Left untreated, complications such as cellulitis can result. The sooner you receive treatment, the more likely it is to be quickly effective. Your podiatrist can easily diagnose your issue and prescribe topical and oral medications to help you.
