Pain in Your Children’s Feet? It Could be from Growing
Growing pains are a common concern for parents of active children. While more commonly associated with leg pain, they can also occur in the feet, which can worry those who may not realize what’s happening.
We at My Chicago Foot Expert sympathize with the burning question about growing pains, so let’s dive into how they manifest in the feet.
What Are Growing Pains in the Feet?
Growing pains can be caused by other common pediatric issues, including out-toeing, flat feet, and joint hyper-flexibility. They usually present as an aching sensation on the outer side of the foot and can be aggravated by wearing narrow shoes.
Growing pains are thought to be caused by rapid growth spurts in bones, muscles, and tendons. They typically occur in children between the ages of 4 and 8 years old and are usually felt in both feet at the same time. The pain often comes and goes, especially at night, and doesn’t cause redness, swelling, or limping.
The heel bone also experiences rapid growth during childhood, so it may put stress on the surrounding area, thus causing pain for your child.
Distinguishing Growing Pains from Other Issues
While growing pains are common, it’s important to be aware of signs that might indicate a different cause for your child’s foot discomfort:
- Localized pain: Growing pains typically affect both feet, but if the pain is concentrated in one foot or a specific area, such as the heel or arch, it could be a sign of an injury or other foot condition.
- Persistent pain: Growing pains typically come and go, but if they are constant or worsen over time, we recommend consulting with a trusted podiatrist.
- Visible swelling or redness: If your child’s foot is swollen or red in addition to the pain, it could be a sign of an injury, infection, or inflammatory condition.
- Limping: If your child is limping, this could be a sign of an underlying issue.
