Problems and Solutions: Foot and Ankle Health for a Windy City Winter

It’s a new year, but we’re dealing with the same winter cold weather that ended 2024. From dry, cracked skin to exacerbated aches and pains, the cold weather can be a burden to our feet and ankles. And today, we at My Chicago Foot Expert are going to tell you why, in addition to providing tips along the way!

The Cold’s Impact on Circulation

First and foremost, cold temperatures constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to your feet. This can lead to:

  • Numbness and Tingling: Reduced blood flow can cause your feet and ankles to feel numb or tingly, especially if you have underlying conditions like Raynaud’s disease, peripheral artery disease, or diabetes.
  • Increased Risk of Chilblains: Chilblains are small, itchy swellings that can develop on the skin in response to cold and damp conditions. They often affect the toes, heels, and fingers.
  • Worsened Pain: Cold can exacerbate pain in conditions like arthritis by making joints feel stiffer and more achy.

Dry Skin and Cracked Heels

Another effect of winter’s dry air is dryness, cracking, and, for some, painful fissures on the heels. This dryness can increase the risk of infection, so be sure to moisturize routinely.

Increased Risk of Injury

This is particularly a risk for anyone with balance issues. From seniors to those with chronic ankle instability, icy sidewalks, and slippery surfaces can singlehandedly cause a sprain or fracture. Be sure to wear shoes with adequate traction and be careful when walking outside.

Additional Tips for Protecting Your Feet and Ankles

Stay warm and dry. Wear socks made of moisture-wicking materials and waterproof boots to protect your feet from the cold and dampness. Trust us – the last thing you need is frostbite.

And for all of you with preexisting conditions like arthritis or neuropathy issues – what’s the best way to keep the blood flowing? Regular exercise, even indoors, can improve circulation and maintain sensation in the lower extremities.

Speaking of existing conditions, be extra vigilant about managing them during these winter months with regular checkups and at-home monitoring.
