Resolve to Improve Foot Health in 2021

2020 has been a year like no other. Personal health has undoubtedly been on American minds as we’ve transitioned to wearing masks in public and social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. There has been significant progress toward a vaccine, and a return to everyday life seems possible in 2021. Of course, that good news doesn’t mean that it’s time to relax our vigilance. The opposite is true. But it does mean you can expand your health consciousness and make some resolutions to take good care of your feet, ankles, and lower legs in the new year. Here are three suggestions from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos

Prevent uncomfortable ingrown toenails by creating good habits around toenail trimming. Always use a clipper explicitly made for the job, rather than scissors. Trim straight across. Do not round the corners. Never pick at your toenails! If you notice redness, swelling, or pus, particularly where the nail meets the skin, call your podiatrist for treatment.

Take foot pain seriously, mainly if it accompanies a change to your foot’s shape, which might indicate the formation of a bunion or a hammertoe. Also, take a quick note of heel pain in the morning, suggesting you have developed plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the soft tissue that spans the length of the bottom of the foot. Report these symptoms or any other change in the shape, appearance, or feel of your feet to your podiatrist without delay.

Everyone – men, women, and children – should visit a board-certified foot doctor like Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM, once a year for preventative care. It is essential for those with diabetes or other illnesses that can impact foot health. If you skipped your annual exam in 2020, now is the time to make an appointment for the coming year.
