Wash Your Hands for Improved Foot Health
October 15 is Global Handwashing Day. Remember back in the early days of the pandemic, when people didn’t know how the coronavirus was spread? Handwashing was on the rise as people sought to protect themselves from the virus. Even though it turned out that Covid-19 is passed through airborne droplets, all that handwashing contributed in part to a reduction in rates of other illnesses, including colds and flu. Good hand hygiene is also a great way to protect and improve foot health, but only if you know why, when, and how to wash your hands. Here are some tips from Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos that your whole family can use.
Good Hand Hygiene Prevents Illness
Prevention is critical. Clean hands reduce the risk of infection and illness. Germs, fungus, and bacteria cause numerous foot health issues, including plantar warts and fungal infections, including athlete’s foot, often by entering the body through minor nicks or cuts in the skin. If you touch your feet with these pathogens on your hands, you’ve helped them along. For most people, these illnesses are uncomfortable and inconvenient, requiring a visit to the podiatrist to cure. For others whose foot health is compromised, especially those with diabetes, any infection is an issue that can lead to long-term complications.
When Is Just as Important as How Often
Wash your hands every time you use the toilet, change a diaper, or provide care to someone who needs assistance in the bathroom. Not only will this remove any microscopic particles of waste that may be on your hands, but it will also help you develop a good habit and move through every day with clean hands. You should also wash your hands before and after preparing food, after petting or playing with your pet, or when coming home after exercise or errands.
Proper Handwashing Technique is Important
Use plenty of warm water. Anti-microbial soap is preferred. Work up a full lather and wash every part of your hands, including the backs and between the fingers for at least 20 seconds. Not sure how long 20 seconds is? It’s about the same length of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice. Rinse well and dry with a clean paper towel. If you’re in a public restroom, use that paper towel to open the bathroom door on your way out, then prop the door with your foot while you put the towel in the trash.
