5 Podiatrist-Approved New Year’s Resolutions

As a new year begins, it’s a fresh slate to care for your feet and ankles. Whether you’re aiming to alleviate existing foot problems, prevent future issues, or simply enhance your overall well-being, these resolutions approved by us at My Chicago Foot Expert will set you on the path to happy, healthy feet in 2025.

1. Schedule a Checkup with Your Podiatrist

This is especially true if you have an existing problem with your feet. So, for all you athletes out there, or diabetics, or anyone else whose feet need some extra TLC, please do not abandon your foot appointments! In fact, start the year on the right foot by scheduling a comprehensive foot exam with your podiatrist today.

2. Splurge on Supportive Footwear

Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Skechers… these are all brands with great shoes at nearly every price point. Ditch those ill-fitting shoes that pinch, squeeze, or lack support, and invest in comfortable, supportive footwear that promotes proper foot alignment and reduces pressure on your feet.

3. Get Active and Stretch Beforehand

Just like any other part of your body, your feet benefit from regular stretching and strengthening exercises. Calf stretches, ankle rotations, and toe curls can improve flexibility, strengthen muscles, and prevent incurring problems like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis when you’re in the heat of action.

And if your feet were an excuse to skip the sweat in 2024, don’t let it be in 2025. Walking, swimming, cycling, and other low-impact activities can improve circulation, strengthen muscles, and maintain a healthy weight.

4. Maintain a Healthy Weight

2025 is the year to thrive. This means eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet to stave off any health problems that could affect your feet. Also, bear in mind that excess weight puts stress on your feet and ankles and contributes to plantar fasciitis, arthritis, and flat feet.

5. Be Mindful of Public Areas

The YMCA and other indoor sporting communities can be breeding grounds for fungal infections, especially during the winter months. So, be sure to wear shoes in public areas like showers, locker rooms, and pool decks.
