Plyometric workouts, like CrossFit box jumps, heavy ropes, and rebounders, are wildly popular for burning calories and building explosive power. But what actually happens to your feet when you repeatedly launch your body weight into the air?

The Physics of the Landing

When you land a jump, your body decelerates rapidly. 

The Ground Reaction Force (GRF) shooting up through your feet can equal three to five times your total body weight

 Your body absorbs this using the Achilles tendon (which acts like a thick rubber band) and the plantar fascia (which stretches to protect your midfoot bones).

How Fitness Trends Impact Your Feet

1.) Box Jumps (CrossFit & HIIT)

The danger isn’t jumping up; it’s the landing. 

Many athletes mistakenly jump backward off the box to return to the floor. This forces the Achilles tendon to absorb a massive, rapid stretch while bearing full body weight, which is a leading cause of tendon ruptures.

2.) Weighted Jump Ropes

Jumping rope keeps you continuously on your toes, meaning the small metatarsal bones bear the brunt of the impact. As you fatigue, your form breaks down, leading to heavier landings.

  • Warm Up: Roll your arches with a lacrosse ball and dynamically stretch your calves before explosive loading.
  • Listen to Your Body: Muscle soreness is normal; sharp heel pain or arch pain is a warning sign of structural damage.
