Tobacco Use Damages Foot Health

It’s been nearly 70 years since the first U.S. Surgeon General’s report on smoking. By now you’ve probably learned that tobacco use causes lung, mouth, and other cancers and that it is dangerous for your heart, lungs, and overall wellbeing. But did you know that tobacco use also poses risks for your feet, ankles, and lower legs? As we prepare to commemorate World No Tobacco Day on May 31, podiatrist Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM wants you to know more.
How does tobacco use affect foot health?
Have you ever noticed how your feet often feel chilly? That’s because your body is struggling to keep them supplied with enough blood to keep them warm. Your feet are far from the core of your body where your organs are located. This means that, even under the best of conditions, your heart has to work hard to send blood to your feet and that the veins in your legs have to function properly in order to facilitate its return. When the blood vessels in your legs become lined with plaque, they narrow and stiffen, causing strain on your circulatory system. This is known as Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).
Signs of peripheral arterial disease include pain and feelings of cold, numbness, and tingling. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should schedule a visit with your foot doctor without delay. These symptoms can indicate a wide range of illnesses. Only an experienced podiatrist can provide you with the careful examination, accurate diagnosis, and proper treatment you need to get well.
Without proper blood flow, it is harder for small nicks, cuts, and other small injuries to get better. This issue is common among people with diabetes. The combination of smoking and a diabetes diagnosis increases the risk of ulcers, and deep wounds that heal slowly, poorly, or not at all. If you have diabetes, it is especially important for you to give up your cigarettes.
Can I really quit smoking?
Yes! Quitting is challenging, but it’s possible. Talk to your doctor at your next visit. Be forthcoming about your history with tobacco and your current use. Modern medications and other treatment options are available.
