6 Foot Health Wellness Tips for Seniors

Senior holding foot while sitting down next to their cane on the couch foot looks like it is in pain

It’s National Wellness Month, so what better time is there to talk about senior foot wellness? As we age, foot hygiene and care are crucial, especially with falling, fractures, and systemic health issues all prevalent. Maintaining good foot health can mean better mobility, more independence, and a better life. Today, Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM, is sharing his best tips for doing just that.

Daily Foot Checks

As sensation can sometimes lessen with age, and vision may decline, keeping an eye on your feet is the key. Not like a hawk – just a few moments each day to check your feet for any cuts, blisters, red spots, swelling, unusual warmth, or changes in your toenails.

Catching a small issue early can prevent it from turning into a big problem.

Proper Footwear

The right shoes are your feet’s best friends. Aging feet often experience thinning fat pads, a wider spread, and may develop bunions or hammertoes. But what does “right” look like?

Avoiding flimsy slippers, worn-out sneakers, or shoes that are too tight or too loose, and instead, going for good cushioning, custom orthotics, and a great grip. We can recommend some great shoe brands during a visit.

Gentle Exercise

A sedentary lifestyle can lead to stiff joints, poor circulation, and muscle weakness in the feet and ankles. That’s why we recommend regular, gentle movements like walking (on softer surfaces if possible), or performing simple exercises like ankle circles, toe curls, and heel raises. Even balance exercises like Tai Chi are great for stability and preventing trips.

Professional Nail Care

Toenails tend to thicken and become more brittle with age, and the dry summer climate can exacerbate this. We also see how trimming safely becomes challenging due to reduced flexibility or vision.

Since improper trimming can lead to painful ingrown toenails or accidental cuts that become infected, we recommend professional care from a podiatrist if you’re finding it too hard.

Manage Underlying Health Conditions

Many systemic health conditions common in seniors directly impact foot health. If you have arthritis or circulatory problems, you should work closely with your primary care physician and podiatrists like us.

Regular visits give you specialized screening, early detection of problems, and proactive management, so we urge you to consider.

Fall Prevention in the Home

Beyond your footwear, your home environment is a major factor in fall prevention. Make sure to clear clutter from walkways, secure loose rugs with non-slip pads, and ensure there’s good lighting in hallways and on stairs. Use handrails whenever possible, and consider installing grab bars in the bathroom.
